I am married (no kids) and will be moving from Seattle to NewYork next month. I will be working in Manhattan and planning to stay in New Jersey. My wife is also working in Seattle and will join me in 3-4 months time. I need some help/pointers wrt the move.

1. My requirement for the apartment are -> 1BHK, $1100-$1300 Rent, Safe Neighborhood, 40-45min commute via public transport to/from Manhattan, preferably Indian communities. Which area should I look at? Any suggestions on the apartments that I should try? Is Newark a safe option?

2. Does NewYork has any state taxes? Washington does not have any. If I work in NewYork and stay in NewJersey, then how does the tax get affected?

3. Is there a need of car for non-work related stuff? (like groceries, etc). Or is the public transportation good enough that I might not need a car?

Please share your experiences/thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Why are you asking a NJ question in the NY forum? I guess you don't understand the deeply entrenched provincialism & small mindedness that exists in this area. It's akin to petty school girls deriving their self worth through their "click".
In other words, you'd be better off asking this question in the NJ forum.

If you want NJ, Edison has the highest concentration of people from India. The Amtrak train will take you to either Wall Street, in about 30 minutes, and Penn Station, in about 45.

It is a fairly-safe town, with lots of shopping, dining, a good hospital, etc. Plus you are only 13 miles from one of NYC.s boroughs, Staten Island, another very- safe place to live.

Woodbridge, NJ, also has lots of people from India, and the real estate is less expensive. Also, a fairly-safe place to live with everything within site for shopping.

Westfield, NJ, very elite and expensive, but very close to Wall Street, about 20 minutes' time. Lots of New Yorkers have moved there. However, the real estate taxes in this town will brake your bank account. In fact, real estate taxes in NJ, are the highest in all of the USA, but the price of the houses are lesser.

Good-luck to you.

Does anyone know: how is public transportation in these places and would he really need a car in every one of them?

1) Amtrak doesn't stop in Edison. It stops in MetroPark.

2) Neither Amtrak nor NJT go to Wall Street. You have to transfer to the PATH at Newark Penn Station, so there's no way you're getting to Lower Manhattan in 30 minutes.

3) Yes, SI is good.

It depends on your standards for what's "good" public transportation. Generally, the train service is every 30-60 minutes (and there are buses in these towns as well), so if you can live with that then it's doable, though not recommended.

Most parts of Dense Suburban and Urban Jersey have a great railway , Urban railway and bus network , during peak hr runs every 5-10 mins depending on the line , off peak every 20-45mins and overnight every 60-80mins.
