what happened is filmore reality rented to a black family back when i lived there in the 1970's and was fire bombed but that was forgotten and did not keep other realtors from doing it and so whites started relocating to staten island at the time as one block after another was becoming integrated

It looks like that happened QUICK. IIRC, it went from being white majority to black majority in less than 10 years.

I wonder why the same thing didn't happen to Howard Beach considering it's also close to East New York.

howard beach was a lot more italian and they tended to stand their ground a lot better than all the other nationalities that made up canarsie in my opinion based on what i saw living there . once a block was breached the tendency was to sell and just leave .

I thought Canarsie's white population was also largely Italian?

Italians have also white flighted plenty of other neighborhoods, and are still white flighting out of some neighborhoods even though they're not dangerous.

The Italians that lived in Canarsie literally RAN to SI and Jersey in the mid '90s. Sad really, in 1990 Canarsie was around 75% non-hispanic white, in 2000 it was less then 10%. Realtors at that time really knew how to scare people

That's insane. My neighborhood has been white flighting too, but nowhere near that quickly.

Neighborhoods usually don't go through that kinda of change in less than a decade. The only other ones would be maybe Ozone Park and Bainbridge.
