In the six weeks I have been here I have noticed all kinds of career women, late 20s to late 40s, wearing outfits that would simply not fly in any DC office. Fishnet hose (!), ridiculously high heels, short skirts and worse, short shorts with a suit (!!) What is the point of dressing so skanky for work?

That's NY fashion, we like to push the envelope around here. Some of us (guys) like that look.

What would fly in a DC office is no standard to aspire to, DC in particular is known for its droll, bureaucratic culture.

I'm sure that skanky is not the aesthetic they're going for, but they are trying to be fashionable. That's where fashion is right now. My theory is that women in Manhattan indulge in shoes and handbags because they don't have cars and houses. It's their main outlet for conspicuous consumption. Style and status are very important, especially in industries like finance, law, and media. If you want to be successful you have to look the part.

On the other hand, it's not as shallow as it sounds. There are women all over the country that want to engage with fashion in a real way. They're forced to make due with magazines and TV shows. Manhattanites have the access to stores and income to make that engagement real.

Some professional women dress provocatively no matter where you live. I think some of them enjoy playing the game of dressing to get looks and then acting offended when men look at them.

Whatever your game is I guess...

my wife has family in NOVA and visits there frequently. Every time they go shopping down there, she comments how "women's clothes down there are so boring" .

Lots of DC offices that sort of dress would be fine in. Most of them Senate offices, grant you :-)

Seriously, what do you care how they dress? No one's making you dress that way, are they?

No, what'll bother me is if women start imitating Lady Gaga's octopus burkha thing from new years eve... a few of those will take up the whole subway car.
