This is crazy. I guess we live right over some boarder, and after spending hours on the phone with the DOE, they can't/won't do anything to help my kid attend the school that we can see from our apartment!
Anyone deal with this situation? The school around the corner from us is very crowded (ps 20 bowne in queens), so they don't even want to let me come there and apply without being in their zone. Even if I could, I doubt I'd get in without being in that zone.
Anyone have some insight that I don't know here? It will really screw me over to have to schlep soooo far out of my way every morning instead of a couple of steps. I'm depressed now!
you could only apply at the in your neighborhood, and get waitlisted.
but if you didn't apply to your official zoned school, only the nearby school, you might end up out in the cold if you don't get a spot. Then you'd have nothin for takin the chance.
I used to live in Electchester and at the time, PS 200 did not go up to 8th grade and they did not provide after school care. I believe it is PS 165 on the other side of the L.I.E., which was only about 7 blocks away, could have allowed my daughter IF I submitted a letter indicating my need for the after school program. The school office instructed that I had to justify my work hours and my husband's hours in order for her to be eligible for the after school program. I submitted 2 letters and they never responded. I also submitted a letter and application to the Math & Science Institute that is by Queens College. They never responded either. The NY DOE has to be worse than DMV. The school that is closer may accept you but you'll probably have to write a letter that justifies why you want your child to go there.
Skip Kindergarten and school your child yourself that first year. In first grade he will be spinning circles around his peers.
Unless of course you need that Kindergarten for baby sitting.
This happen to our friends last year however here in UWS. With here a lot of the kids are also enrolled to Private Schools too. It was not till literally 2 days before school started they were accepted to PS 199.
Its a nightmare here. Luckily my second child will not be as difficult as we are zoned and have her sister attending the school too so she get priority.
I hope it all works out for you. Its a very stressful time I think for parents and kids.

Send the child to Catholic school. St. Michael's is near PS 20.
