I think many of you are overblowing the educational requirement. 90 percent of the country don't require college credits for a police officer, including most state police departments. I think the job can be done just fine without the credits. However, I would never advocate someone without a couple of years of human services experience to become a cop. Being a cop shouldn't be somebody's first experience managing people. They have too much authority for that.
I agree with what you said. The college thing IMO seems to be an extra hurdle they agreed to make the process a little tougher. I don't think it adds much overall but considering how much high school education has dropped off in this country it's probably necessary at this point. I will add though that I would prefer some sort of residency requirement. Some of these guys never live in the city from before they were cops during, after etc. Then we wonder why they look at everyone like a perp...

Yep thats true. One of my good friends is a cop and only has an associates degree. He applied for the seargents exam however he has to go back to school for more credits and thats what he hates, now he is contemptlating on leaving the NYPD because he has to go back to school to earn a 4 year degree for advancement. 60 credits only gets you in the door as a cop but it wont gurantee you no advancement. Probably with 60 credits a cop can become a detective of some sort.
I don't see the big deal in having some educational requirements for a supervisory position. A lot of colleges here in NYC have specific programs catered to cops. It's very doable. Your friend is a little lazy or lacks ambition IMO...

I think they want the credits to make sure that you aren't a dumbass.
