And forget about ever sleeping on a Thursday/Friday/Saturday night it's LOUD LOUD LOUD.
I lived on W 4th near 5th Ave for a few years. By 12ish it quieted down. The noise is part of the ambience of the area. The restaurants & shops were unique. Spent alot of time in the park. The train station was two blocks away (the stairs up/down were a good workout if you were heading to the F train). Felt pretty safe walking around at night.
I agree that you won't get sleep in the heart of the Village. My friend had an apt in the area and said while it was convenient, she NEVER got sleep from Thurs - Sun night. Plus the apartments there are relatively small, even for Manhattan.
Much better places to hang out and live in Manhattan IMO.
I like McDougald Street very much, always have. I don't know however that I'd like a second floor apartment facing the street. It's hustley-bustley.
The first place on McDougal (at Eighth St.) used to be a Brit style pub I liked called SHAKESPEARE'S where I had my first Shepherd's Pie (and coincidentally met Rado and Ragni...memorable!)
McDougal only gets a bit grim at its Southern end (often used it as a quick trip to the Holland Tunnel.)
sharing an apartment with several roommates because the rent is so high, and it is probably going to be a glorified tenement anyway.
listening to tourist noises on a busy street constant.
Nah, I would rather eat a bowl of razor blades.
better off getting a bigger apartment in one of the boroughs and taking the train to
the city for fun, the train ride isn't that bad, millions do it, plus seriously, it will allow you to have more money to do all the fun things you want to do. Why spend most of your earnings on rent.??
i get that your young and want the whole City experience, and you should, it is fun....but it is more fun when you have money...
I'm guessing OP is a big fan of Sex and the City and other similar shows/ movies and is looking for a similar lifestyle....
I've never seen an episode of sex and the city. I watch very few shows and movies. So, I wouldn't have any clue about that stuff.
It's possible I may get to NYC this summer and decide California kicks its tail. I can come right back without having any impact on my employment and I have no wife or kids that have to come with me!
Enjoy yourself. The heart of Greenwich Village is a terrific place to live. (I lived on COMMERCE STREET.)
