there are hostels on the upper west side they can be had for as little as $26 - $50. a night - these lower lost rooms are dormitory style but hey if you can rough it certainly beats another rent - it would be a shared bathroom but the also do offer private rooms with a private bath but i never looked into those - here are a couple of them but you should check their recent pricing - hotel newton, hotel 31, seton hotel, broadway hotel & hostel - i believe there is one thats on the east but for the most part they are on the upper west side - a week stay would be much less expensive that having an apartment that you only visit whenever -
A studio. Basically the lowest priced apartment in a convenient area to spend some time in NY. Not opposed to outer Burroughs possibly Jersey but I guess that's another forum.
Don't really want to rent a room in someone else's apartment. I want to feel at home.
A bit out of touch with what's affordable.
You can get a studio in a few (not many) decent outer borough neighborhoods for $950 to $1000 but you said you want to spend "nowhere near $1000" for a studio. That request is, IMHO, impossible. Also don't forget that you will have utility bills at this apartment in addition to the rent.
If you are out of touch with market rent prices, maybe you could do some research by looking at rentals on websites like craigslist, nybits, and hotpads.

There are ads on CraigsList for part-time roommates. Probably your best bet if you don't want to be in the middle of nowhere. What's the point of having a pied a terre if you're stuck on the subway for an hour or more?
