Exactly! When I lived near Queens College it took me a good 30 minutes just to get to Main and Roosevelt.

What? Why? The OP could easily live much closer in and in a much more interesting neighborhood for their budget.

Our combined income is approx 115k and the mortgage on our house is 2270/month. We pay approx 350-400 a month for cable/w/s/g/elec/gas on top of that.
We are not tied to Manhattan in any way, and are very open to neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Queens, and The Bronx (not interested in Staten Island or New Jersey). Our main needs would be Subway access (40 minutes or less into Manhattan would be desirable), at least 2 bedrooms, a modern apartment or rowhouse, and a family friendly neighborhood (near commercial districts, but not on a commercial street or street full of bars, for example).
We would like to stay within our current living budget or less if at all possible. I have no clue if this is actually reasonable or not, but I am willing to give it a shot and find out.

40 minutes into what part of Manhattan? Midtown, Financial District? East? West?

Either midtown or downtown. 40 minutes is not a strict number for me, just something I am shooting for. If its 50-55, that would be ok for the right neighborhood.
