East NY was never as predominantly black as its brooklyn neighbors Brownsville, Bed-stuy, Flatbush, Crown Heights, etc. It was always a mix of Blacks and Hispanics. My family came from Puerto Rico in the 50s when they moved to East NY and even the high schools, there were always fights between the blacks and hispanics... Also there were avenues that were more hispanic than Black that have changed alot in recent years... Where we used to live on Pitkin near Jerome that area around ther was probably a 60-40 split hispanic/black but when we moved it became much more Black. I'd say the breakdown now is somewhere around 70-30 Black hispanic...
