Hey all, how's it going. I'm going to New York on a J1-Visa to NY this summer from the end of May to mid September with 5 other people.

I am just looking for suggestions on places which are both affordable, safe and not too far a commute from the city ( anything under an hour travelling is cool)

So far, places I have heard that are good for housing at a decent price are Sunnyside, Woodside Mespeth and such in Queens...
basically any of the boroughs of Queens, Brookyln and would be open to.
What is the best place to secure accomadation, any general tips? If possible we want accomadation asap... as we don't want to spend too much in hostels, especially considering we may need to give a months rent plus deposit up front. Realistically would be looking at places at 1000 and under although I understand 1000 is still expensive and you can get places for cheaper in the boroughs.

Also, can anybody recommend to me good places to try and look for work? I am open to working in bars/ restaurants but the only negative is I have no experience in this area. I am also thinking of doorman work... will be hoping to go over to EIIC/ Aisling Irish centre when I get over.
Any help is much appreciated, thanks a mill

A studio/one room apt. costs approx. $1000 a month in a good area in Queens. I would add Rego Park, Queesn to your list. You probably will need to look for a sublet as usually rental contracts run on 1-2 year basis.
