hey guys, I have an AC unit for an 8x10 bedroom.

Last summer it worked great, its just kind of ugly looking and old and the thin film on the sides of the unit when in the window barely separate the room from the elements outdoors.

so is there anything better for cooling such a small space these days?

I was looking at dyson bladeless fans, all the poor reviews seem to be for larger spaces

the thing about fans is that they just blow air at the same temperature around, can be helpful but barely compares to an ac unit that actually uses a chemical cooling agent that it passes warm air through

so anybody have experience with something that worked, but wasn't an AC unit?

It seems your complaints are about the unit's age and appearance. I suggest that you buy a new one. Try the low-profile a/c from Sears. At 6000 btus, it will be plenty to cool down your room. Also, it looks attractive in the window. (I am assuming you have a fairly standard sized window.)

That is why air conditioners were invented and became popular.

Air conditioners work by passing Freon thru a series of cooper tubing and passing air over the tubing and into the room.

Fan blowing air over dry ice?

****

I really don't get what the problem is with the a/c, but ahhhhh try using foam insulation at the sides and edges.

You could also try using a windowless a/c (I think that is what they are called).

Or, how about multiple fans, 3 or 4....

Before air conditioners, theaters bought large blocks of ice and blew fans over them.
But, aside from that and blowing COOLER air into the room when the air outside is cooler than inside, there is no substitute for an air conditioner, NONE

If you hate the folding plastic slides, or they deteriorate to a mass of holes, just unscrew them and cut a piece of plywood to fit the opening and paint it the same color as the window. Use caulk or foam rubber to keep air infiltration out. The plywood also keeps out SOUND better than the thin flexible plastic.

If your air conitioner works, KEEP IT no matter HOW it looks...they are not meant as a fashion statement.

(An 8 x 10 room needs no more than 5,000- 6,000 BTU/hr unless it's in a broiling attic. Bigger units do not dehumidify well.)
