Well, SI might be a part of planet Earth, but it is not a part of the typical Transplant conversation.
"Distance" isn't what truly matters, DESIREABILITY is the absolute factor!!!!
The more desireable a place, the greater the Demand, the greater the Demand, the greater the cost. Plain, basic, economics.
SI isn't comparably cheap because it is distant, it is because their is a low desireability. For some, the distance might be an issue, for *more* the place itself, and many of the sort that live there are what makes SI undesireable.
For example, my GF grew up there and would not move back for anything in the world! Zero cost housing and absolute safety would not be enough. In her experience it was a horrible place.
So, the problem, of course is MORE than simply the commute.
Do you think people choose Fort Greene, Clinton Hill or say Prospect Heights, Williamsburg or Greenpoint rather than SI, becaue of the commute?!
The draw to such places is far more than the shorter commute. Plus who would want to live next door to 'Big Ang' or Wu-Tang for that matter....
Not a desireable proposition even if the commute were short.
