Hello to all confused parents in Brooklyn. Can anyone advise regarding the application process for middle schools in Brooklyn? Is it zoned? Or is it like the HS process that you have to apply to get into each school. I may be zoned for a decent school, but I am not sure if the kids get to go there automatically, or not. Also, say you are zoned for one, I assume you still have to take tests to get into the special programs. Would love to hear from anyone who went through the process.

My child recently graduated from middle school, yes in Brooklyn, you will most likely get a zoned school. Your child may have to take additional tests, and the school will look at the statewide/city wide for the math/reading scores. The exact process I am not sure about, but if your child does not make it to the school of their choice, then the zoned school is the only option. I urge your child to go to open houses and ask for advice and the exact process, since it is probably different for each school.
