The Systems in this region are very old dating back to the 1820s and 1910s , tunnels are very hard to widen & Expensive. The PATH is also a commuter rail by Federal standards due to the fact it shares with freight... So the Subway cannot mix at all with the PATH. Theres no room for a connection , underground its a mess of pipes , subway lines and water and gas lines... Our Regional Rail system is the only Railroad system that can interconnect but even that's a stretch. The different Railroads who built our larger system were in completion with each other , so they made the trains different sizes and the power systems different... that's very hard to change. NJ never wanted a subway extension that was a pet project of blommberg , we wanted a Regional Rail system and LRT system within NJ connecting to NYC....which is cheaper to build.
