That area can be a little scary, even in the daytime.

Great historic architecture, though. Used to be a big Irish neighborhood in the 1880's.

Actually used to be all Germans, then Irish then all Jews when my grandparents arrived in the early 50s. Very little of the achitecture remains, but those few that survived are classic. What's more interesting is a new bar called Margarita Lounge opened on E149th by Timpson (couple blocks east of Union Ave), and Thursday night is "Gay Night" which apparently gets busy. Who knew!

And another bar called "Lucky Seven" on E155th and Prospect Ave (a few blocks north) also has "Gay Night" on Thursdays. I had no idea the area was becoming so homo-friendly.

Just out of interest, I put the street in google maps streetview to see what it looked like. I spotted a Mexican place called Mexicina on 149th by Tinton. Anyone from the Bronx know anything about the place, it looked like it received a lot of good reviews.

I eat at Mexicocina often, as do my tenants and neighbors, and the place is great. Mexicocina Bronx | Mexican, Breakfast | Order Online | 800 E 149th St . They are now on yelp and getting excellent reviews! It opened about 3 or 4 years ago, and the owner has worked every day at the place since. It is small, about 6 tables, and mostly does a take-out/delivery business. He has done so well he opened a second location about 3 blocks away which is more of a diner, called Mexicosina (with an "s").

1 block north of the 6 train at 576 Southern Blvd is a new restaurant that opened called "El Porton". It is a tequila bar which will feature dozens of speciality tequilas from Mexican, and has some great Mexican food. The decor is very nice, feels like you are in Manhattan! They don't have their liquor license yet, however if the owner knows you, he will serve you alcohol! I usually get a few free shots of tequila =) They have one other location in West Harlem, and this is their first location outside of Manhattan. No website that I could find yet...I will add it when I see it.

There is also a new Dominican restaurant opening across the street...hasn't opened yet but it is rumored to also be very nice. I will update you on this also.

The new Crossroads condo development along E149th between Union ave and Southern Boulevard breaking ground this fall/early spring http://ndarchitects.com/affordableEletter.html (second pic from the right) will no doubt be anchoring alot of these new businesses and spurring further development.

That's good to know. Maybe sometime on one of my off days, I'll take a visit up there and check it out for myself.

I don't make any claims to whether it is good/bad, or whether anyone even goes to these. All I am saying is that I noticed them. I've seen a line for the Margarita Lounge place, but not for the Lucky Seven place.
