Las Vegas to be the other popular relocation spot, mostly for people in NY/NJ and CA. I went there this past summer with my boyfriend and we fell in love with it. We got to experience the 120 degrees, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. Since there's no humidity, I think it's equivalent to 80 degrees where with all the humidity we have. I think I enjoyed the dry 120 a lot more than a humid 80 degrees on Long Island. They say it's the fastest growing area of the country, and I believe it. I saw tons of people from NY when we were there. Our family friends from LI love it there and are glad they went. There's always something to do there, and you never get bored, it's great. I personally would not move to the actual city, but we're looking into Henderson and Mountain's Edge (a brand new town southwest of the city). The schools in the suburbs are much better than in the city from the ratings I've read.
I Too Am A New Yorker Who Went To Nevada And Fell In Love.... I Actually Went As Far As Buying A House In Laughlin (a Lake Community Witha Few Casino's About 70 Miles From Vegas) Unfortunately The Health Of My Father Prevented Me From Moving So I Was Forced To Rent The Townhouse Out. What I Found Was That The Income Level Of The Average Nevada Resident...coupled With The Fact That Many Who Live There Sucumb To A Life Of Gambling, Is Quite Low, And Therefore Many People Fall On Hard Times. Be Careful...my Advice...visit There A Few More Times And Talk To A Lot Of The Locals...

We spoke to our family friends and they say only to gamble once in a blue moon. They love it there and would never come back to Long Island. I know about the whole gambling thing, we wouldn't get involved in all that. We're careful about our money lol
I'm originally from Huntington NY & East Meadow, but i have been in the LAs Vegas Nevada area for over 10 years. I just read your post.
Right now i'm heading to work, and i dont check these chat boards everyday, so if you want send me a private message and i'll answer whatever questions you have.
Have a great day --Tony

The summer weather is crazy though. 120 dry heat? Yeah right. It's still incredibly hot outside! If you stand outside, and aren't in the shade, you'll feel like you're baking in an oven. Its really THAT hot.
If you really want the Southwest desert life, but aren't such a big fan of the gambling you should look into Phoenix. Phoenix, like Vegas, is currently a boom town and has lots of people moving in from the Northeast and California.

I'd rather be in Las Vegas. And yes, I experienced standing in the sun plenty of times there when it was 110-120 degrees. As long as you drink, you're fine.
Also, i'm a teacher, so it will be a lot easier there to get a job since they're recruiting like crazy. Phoenix schools pay hardly anything and I hear the schools are worse there, from a teacher's viewpoint.
Not sure if your read my last post. But I'm from Long Island, been in Vegas for over 10 years, I try to check this site when I can, but if you want more info then I'm about to pass on then please send me a private message.
Ok lets see, the heat is pretty bad here, yep its dry, but dry or not when its 110 its damn hot. Some people love it though, I personally like it when its about 90.
Most of Las Vegas has a very high crime rate, especially when you compare it to Long Island, the crime on Long Island is actually very low. While here there are some serious gang problems that are only getting worse. I recommend Henderson Nevada, that's only 20 min's from Vegas and in the same county, yet the crime is lower. Not as safe as Long Island but safer then most of Vegas.
I'm not sure if your looking to buy a house or rent? The homes here in the safe areas are kinda pricey now, when we moved here in 1996 we paid 115,000 for a 3 bed 2 bath, with a 2 car garage, we sold that and now own a 4 bed 2100 square feet, 2 baths, 2 car garage and its worth around 380-390,000.
Jobs are very easy to find here unless you fail the drug test or have a serious criminal background. And I would guess that they need teachers because they are constantly building new schools to keep up with the growth.
Its very easy to fit in with the people here, not to many people are originally from here so you will meet people from all over, but get ready to see a lot and I mean a lot of " Illegal Aliens" . Remember where we are located, we are not all that far from the border. A lot of New Yorkers are here, so that helps with making friends.
Tons and tons of restaurants, good ones too. Top quality. Well the one thing you might miss is the NY Chinese food ( it sucks here ) and the pizza, there are a few good pizza places, but I guess its really the water.
Now even though my wife and I like it here, we are hoping to move soon, due to the fact that our children will be starting school soon, the schools here do not rate well, they also have violence problems in High schools and we do not want to bring our children up around casinos, you really cant avoid the slot machines, they are everywhere now, Walmart, K-mart, target, 7-11, most bars, even grocery stores have a slot machine section. So get ready to always hearing coins dropping and people complaining how much Moola they just blew.
Best of luck, where on the Island are you anyway?

So who else is thinking about moving there?
Hey there me and my fiance are thinking about moving out there.. we just came back from our first trip and fell in love! a few friends from ny have relocated there also
I hate Las Vegas probably more than any place on Earth. It is as vulgar as vulgar gets. But the what else would one expect from any town built and run by the Mafia.
And the 115 degree desert Summers with constant burning eyes and bloody nose is just icing on the cake.
And for FUN you sit in air conditioning pulling a handle for hours on end.
When the mafia was there the place had a some class. People were treated fairly and were able to indulge their vice with a modicum of temperance and respect. Check the pedigree the mafia are from the morally anchored line of respectable Catholics. With the Mafia long gone from Las Vegas the moral anchoring has become degenerate incoherence fostered by ruling class corporate tycoons.
Now that the Catholic influence is gone from Las Vegas the place is run by money grubbing corporate America. It is the most morally disgusting place on earth. Greed, whores, drugs, losers, pimps, violence it is all gloried. people are chewed up and spit out. It is a place where people oscillate between self gratification and abject alienation before giving way to deprivation.
They actually have nearly nearly-nude girls dancing around the table games in 2012. The entire city is a soulless ugly monument to the quest for self-gratification. It is example of the gnostic duality that is the present in every aspect of this present regime. The esoteric truth is that you go there to have fun. The esoteric (real) truth is that you go there to make the mammon worshiping tycoons rich. The city a a locus of sin. Stay far far away from this dump. It is doomed.
