I don't want to drift into this discusssion because it will take us off topic but I work with women and men in the 'hood of Bed Stuy & South Bronx. There are lots of deeply imbedded mindsets that keeps men from education and gainful employment. However, they have swagger and attract women. The women are lonely and they get together with these men. People have sex and don't prevent pregnancy. The cycle continues. The mindset has to be broken before anything will change.

It's not just whites. Let's be real -- lots of blacks and Latinos have washed their hands of the problems. I'm no martyr. I could easily be doing something else and making lots more money but I think there are a few who want help and can change but the only way to do that is to be an example. As we move away from the central cities, we lose our perspectives on what's going on with our people. That's why I have mentioned throughout this thread that concentrating poverty has never resulted any anything positive.
Webster..of course you picked all the scary terms...because really...unless we have an exploitative capitalistic society..the only other choices are Socialist-Welfare state and Dictatorship. You sure you don't work for Fox News?
The kind of system make over I am talking about is the kind that:
Removes all "special interest funding and lobbying" from our government
Pays all people sustainable wages
Provides quality and free education, including college and trade schools/apprenticeships
Removes stock market gambling of critical resources, like "futures trading" of food products, commodities like oil and gas, and others
True universal healthcare for everyone
Comprehensive services to all citizens, like free day care, mandatory vacation/sick/holiday/personal time off regardless of industry or occupation, etc
Reorganization of the entire tax code, elimination of all the tax loopholes, and highly tax companies or their products when they close here and open in foreign locations
Major investment in technology and public works projects, like energy (not oil), high-speed rail and light rail systems, and "knowlegde hubs" in every city where anyone can access and learn a new high-tech skill
Revamp business regulations to ensure what happened in 1929 and 2008 never happens again
And these are just off the top of my head...and they all take a total revamping of our system and ALOT of money. Until everyone has skin in the game and can prosper together, and not just have the top exploit everyone below, nothing will change. "Adding more police" or "schools need more funding" or "more condoms for kids" or "more prisons" is just a waste of time and a deflection from the real problem. If you institute the kinds of changes that take care of everyone's needs, and promotes a healthy relationship between government/people/business/environment, will you see the "ghettos" and our societal ills disappear (in general) and a truly great country.
I won't be holding my breath.

Maybe so, but I see lots of little children everyday who have not made this decision YET. And, without access to people who care about helping them direct their lives, then A, B, and C often come to fruition.

But those suggestions on which you comment would begin to change institutions, which would actually create profound changes over time.
They won't happen, unfortunately. Those who benefit from the status quo have far too much to gain.
That said, we should refrain from emphasizing this to the young people, and/or to those who "don't want a job." Because in that case, why do anything ?
Not sure why you would be an angry taxpayer...we are paying the lowest tax rates in history. And just to correct your gripes:
A: They don't want a minimum wage/dead end job with no benefits
B: They don't want to go to a drop-out factory
C: Low-income people, or rather those who are on the fringe (economically or otherwise) are the ones who have always pushed for changes in the world. Today is no different.
I will agree that throwing money at someone doesn't make them a better person, and that goes for every person, the wealthy included.

To suggest that the president has a better idea what he is "doing" by virtue of his "blackness" is simply insane. I would like to mention, again, the dire need for critical thinking skills in this country.
If you think the "black" president has any particular sympathy for you, you are sadly mistaken. Nor should he have any, necessarily. He is allegiant to his social class, as are most "blacks." So are ghetto people, with the significant difference that they insist on defining their own social class and cultural allegiances as "black" - which is an absolute error.

But they will make the decision, most of them. A few won't, and they will do well. It is heartbreaking to observe. You can attempt to intervene but what they get at home is quite tenacious and near impossible to overcome.
PS-Obama is not black....he is not white..he is both. Because he has chosen to "take a side" is irrelevant. He's the country's first biracial president, not first black president.
