Some are but like I said, I lived in Ozone Park and mail was addressed as the Jamaica branch. In other words the envelope read: 123 Main Street Jamaica, NY 11417. I didn't live in Jamaica.
You lived within the service area of the Jamaica, NY post office, of which Ozone Park, NY was one of the several postal stations (branches) of the Jamaica, NY post office.
Other stations (branches) of the Jamaica, NY post office are: Richmond Hill, NY; South Richmond Hill, NY; Kew Gardens, NY; South Ozone Park, NY; Woodhaven, NY; etc.; etc; etc.

It wasn't the custom in Brooklyn to use the name of the postal station (branch) of the Brooklyn, NY post office as part of the mailing address.

That is so not true. Everyone appreciated Walters maps and geographical guidance......when it was appropriate.
Somehow starting a thread asking where is the best pizza on long island (there really isnt any)...and then get hit with a geography lesson sort of got many angry at Walter.
Each borough has its own unique history and the postal mailing addresses in Queens is a reminder of that. In Queens for instance, the Long Island City, Flushing and Jamaica post offices follow what used to be independent cities and towns.
For example in the Jamaica article the last paragraph in the indroduction says this: Some locals group Jamaica's surrounding neighborhoods[6] into an unofficial Greater Jamaica,[7] roughly corresponding to the former Town of Jamaica, including Richmond Hill, Woodhaven, St. Albans, Rosedale, Springfield Gardens, Hollis, Laurelton, Cambria Heights, Queens Village, Howard Beach and Ozone Park. The New York Racing Association, based at Aqueduct Racetrack in South Ozone Park, lists its official address as Jamaica (Central Jamaica once housed NYRA's Jamaica Racetrack, now the massive Rochdale Village housing development). JFK Airport and the hotels nearby also use Jamaica as their address .
Most of these Jamaica Town neighborhoods will have zip codes begining with 114, like Woodhaven (11421), Richmond Hill (11418) and Cambria Heights (11411).
116 --- the Rockaways (formerly part of the Town of Hempstead). The Rockaways were never a independent Town but instead were a distant part of the Town of Hempstead. However, the rest of Hempstead did not join New York City and instead helped to form what is now Nassau County.
The Town of Hempstead is situated in Nassau County, which, until 112 years or so ago, was very much a part of Queens. When did Queens become part of NYC?

The western-quarter of Queens County became part of New York City on January 1, 1898. A year later, on January 1, 1899, the eastern three-quarters of Queens County, the part not within the jurisdiction of New York City, seceded and became Nassau County.
That's what it should be whether a place is located in Manhattan or in the Bronx, Staten Island, Brooklyn or Queens.
Don't you think the Post Office should have a say in how the mail gets delivered? As it is, the Postal Service would say that you are wrong -- and also note that there is a practical consideration as well. Street names repeat from borough to borough. If you address something to an address on "Broadway", for example, how do you know whether it is Broadway on Staten Island, or Broadway in Manhattan, or Broadway in Brooklyn, or Broadway in Astoria, Queens -- all of which are separate and unconnected roads -- unless you specify that?

Yes, the Post Office should have a say in how mail gets delivered; but the Post Office also needs to be consistent with their own rules in how mail is addressed within the same municipality.

If all addresses inf New York City were "New York, NY" then Broadway in other than Manhattan would have had a name change.
