It is kinda ridiculous that we have to create a seperate class of cabs because the existing fleet won't serve the 4 other boroughs...don't you agree? Practically speaking however, the new green cabs are just fine for me and I hope that they fill the void we have in the boroughs. The idea of actually getting a metered cab in Mott Haven is like a fantasy world...can't wait!
I also agree that I am seeing more yellow cabs in the Southern Bronx areas, like Mott Haven. I think it is partially because more cab drivers are moving into the community, and partially because of the increased newbies moving in.
I actually hailed a yellow cab in mott haven once on my way to work in the city. Also don't forget that there is a yellow taxi depot in mott haven. Then again I did see two transplants drop off from taxi on bruckner boulevard.
Jester the difference between the yellow and new green cabs is that the new green cabs will work exclusively north of 96th st and the other 4 boroughs, while the yellow will be south of 96th st. They are both metered cabs.
Either one can drop off a customer anywhere in NYC, but can only pick up street hails in their respective areas.
Obviously the green cabs will be mostly around Williamsburg, Brooklyn heights, Park Slope, (maybe Bay Ridge).
Long Island City, Astoria (maybe Forest hills), and that's about it.
Forget about SI and the Bronx. Regardless of what's being said, the cabbies won't be going there.
I would say it is likely they won't be in Staten Island, but they will be in and around the Southern Bronx, but probably not the mid or northern Bronx.
Both can go to JFK...both can drop a passenger off at any destination in the 5 boroughs. The only difference is where they can PICK UP a passenger. If the green cab picks up a passenger in Crown Heights and drops them off in midtown, the green cab must return back to the other 4 boroughs or north of 96th in order to get another fare. Likewise, if a yellow cab picks up a passenger in Soho and drops them off in Yankee Stadium, the yellow cab must go back south of 96th street in order to get another fare.
At least that is the theory.
