I'll be moving to NYC in July and based on what I've read in this forum, Astoria, Jackson Heighst and Elmhurst are usually the top choices for commuting to Midtown. Yes, I realize there is also Sunnyside but the "7" line doesn't go my office.

So I would really appreciate any recommendations for a good apartment in these areas. What I'm looking for:

- less than $1200 for a studio / 1 bedroom or $1800 for 2 bedrooms
- as close to E, F, M, N, Q or R lines as possible. I would be willing to pay a premium for this
- safe neighborhood
- total commute time to midtown less than 30 minutes
- within walking distance from a supermarket would be great

Also is it easy to find a respectful roommate (I'm thinking either graduate student or professional) for renting a 2 bedroom apartment?

Thanks again for any help

Hi there! I stumbled upon your post while looking for information about different Queens neighborhoods. It sounds like we're both looking for similar things--I need to move on July first to an apartment near the E, M, or R trains, ideally in Astoria or Jackson Heights. I'm a 3rd year graduate student in clinical psychology living in Astoria. My roommate bought a studio in Manhattan, and my internship location is changing, so I need to move closer to those train lines. Let me know if you'd be interested in talking more about what you're looking for, if you're still looking. -Sarah

I would add Rego Park & Forest Hills to your list of areas to check out in Queens. Forest Hills is approx. 30 min. commute on the express E/F and Rego Park is slightly more 40 min. commute as one needs to change to the local R/M subway lines. If one lives close to Queens Blvd. one is always a short walk from a supermarket, a drug store, a subway station and other amenities.
