The M60 stops at Astoria Blvd N/Q Stop. which is two stops away. In NYC, its best to travel in the direction you are going. It would be worth it to shoot up to the M60. Your commute to Grand Central will take you south, then you would have to backtrack north again.
Also, you have to transfer trains at 59th Street (for the 4/5/6) and then Again at Grand Central (for the metro north). You'd be making 2 transfers in the OPPOSITE direction, just to get on the Metro North.
The M60 is reliable, except during PM rush. Traffic on the bridge is not really an issue most of the day.
That commute is a pain. I drove from Queens to White Plains once and it took awhile. You're probably better off looking for a place in The Bronx, like Riverdale.
bluedog2 - thanks for sharing your experience. an underlying upside is that my lease in Astoria expires in April 2013 . . . this anticipated long commute will have an end.
Hi! So I came across your post and we have similar concerns...I live in yonkers (westchester which is about 20mins from WP) and work in Ardsley and CT during the week. I am actually considering moving to Astoria but am worried about the commute as well! I visit friends there every wknd and (aside from the $13 round trip toll) it literally takes me 20-25mins to get there. The commute during off peak traffic hours is great! Do you have a car? I also noticed you mentioned your lease expires in April 2013...where do you live? If youre looking for an apt near WP maybe we could swap! LOL
