Hey all, I'm a south Dakota girl currently residing in Sacramento, ca. I really love manhattan and don't care for the other boroughs. I plan to move there next year. The problem is I can't afford to live in the well to do, upstanding parts. So I'm stuck with harlem, WaHa and inwood. I don't do roommates and refuse to live outside of the island.

I'm a single white 22 yo female and from what I've read my type would be ostracized or constantly harrassed in these areas. I've always been too scared to ride the train past 57th street everytime I've visited nyc. But now I have no choice, would I be safe? I already know to carry mase. And what about rodents in these areas? Is there any fresh food sold in the area? Do taxis even drive up there? If I made friends in Soho or Greenwich would they ever come to my apartment? Is every one black and mexican? Please help a mid west gal out! Thanks !

The general rule in the hoods are its much safer on the west than the east.
White people live in those areas too.
Stop worrying this is the only area you can afford so might as well make the best of it, it isnt that bad. Taxi's do come up here and as long as you arent dirty there shouldnt be rodents.

The only harrassing you would get, is being catcalled by guys if your an attractive female.

Depends what you mean by harrassed? If you mean pursued yes. Dominican guys love white girls and would try to hook up with you. You might end up getting with a Dominican being in Washington Heights.

Sorry if anything I said came across as offensive, I'm just asking honest questions. I'm not scared of minorities, I just know my experiences with them haven't always been so pleasant.

And thanks lost_boy, I will only look into the west side.

You will probably get a whole bunch of bulls-ish questions about how Harlem and other uptown neighborhoods are completely safe now. That's wrong. Harlem and other neighborhoods are not as dangerous as they were before and are pretty enjoyable now but that doesn't mean you should let your guard down. Those neighborhoods still have higher crime than other neighborhoods in the borough. I'm not saying you will get shot or witness an armed robbery but you will see shady characters and parts that are still unclean and ghetto-ish.

There are rodents everywhere in NYC.

Cabs didn't go to those places before but they do now. You should have no problem getting one.
