Yet another case of a rich White/European American woman shoplifting with the same time worn script. That is she pleads guilty to a lesser offense thus avoiding a criminal conviction (and record) and the whole thing is framed as a "misunderstanding".

Mind you Kate Meckler could have paid in cash or credit/charge card for the relative chump change (in her world at least) amount she stole, but yet she and so many like her steal. Anyone who has worked in retail knows shoplifting is not always the "usual suspects", but that is who suffers the harsher penalties. If Ms. Meckler had been AA, Latino/Hispanic, transgender or any other minority group things would have statistically been different. The charges of grand larceny etc... would not have been pleaded down to an offense and the person would have not only either been convicted or have plead guilty, but have served jail time instead of merely community service.

Kate Meckler | Saks Fifth Avenue | Warburg Realty

You no doubt have these statistics that show that minorities arrested for similar offenses usuall serve jail time?

Default Shopping while white & Rich in NYC

It must be great to actually get caught stealing over 1500 dollars of clothing, but not have to worry about serving any jail-time. Ahhh the joys and advantages of white privilege. You can shop(lift) and still not have to worry about serving time in jail, also you can keep your job...

Quote:

Asked if the incident will affect Meckler's employment at Warburg Reality, the company's president, Frederick Warburg Peters, tells us, "I have every confidence in Kate and we continue to value highly her association with Warburg Realty." You know, maybe this whole thing is actually going to be a plus for her—spotless ethical probity isn't exactly a quality New Yorkers expect, or necessarily want, from their brokers. "You should really try Meckler—she found us a two bedroom in Gramercy that was a total steal."

Please stay on topic. Do you really believe that a black woman caught stealing 1700 dollars worth of merchandise would not be serving any jail time?

This is definitely white privilege at work...

The daughter of a wealthy tech CEO who owns a mansion in Southampton will avoid jail after admitting to stealing $1,644 worth of clothes from Saks Fifth Avenue. Kate Meckler, who is described by the NY Post as one of New York's top real estate brokers, was arrested in April for grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property after Saks security caught her pulling "a top, a pair of jeans and a jacket from a rack" and stuffing it in her handbag. Ooopsy, is that frowned upon? I'm sorrrry, I'll just put them back. Hey, UNHAND ME ROGUE!

Why is this criminal not in prison for her crime? She should have received at least 3-6 months for grand larceny based on the NY law code.

Are you under the impression that probation is an unusually light sentence for a shoplifting charge or something?

Why wasn't this criminal charged with a felony and given jail time? My answer: Because she's white and upper income, so the rules do not apply to her.

Why is she above the law?
