I'm thinking about moving to a place on Keap and S 4th St. What do you know about the area? Will coming home late at night be an issue?

Thanks.

It's mostly fine. I dated a girl who lived a block from there about 5 years ago. I never had any trouble at any time of day or night but the area is mostly hispanic and just walking around I could sense that I was seen as some sort of infiltrator that was contributing to rising rents just by my presence (which is probably true). I know a handful of people who live in south Williamsburg and none of them have ever had a problem but it's not difficult to sense the tension between new and old in the neighborhood. You'll be around plenty of transplant hipsters and long time hispanic residents. I personally wouldn't live there because I don't like feeling like I'm unwanted in my own neighborhood but that's just me. Plenty of people live there and like it just fine. I still occasionally find myself in the area for bars and restaurants. If it's the Williamsburg scene that you're looking for it's a perfectly decent place to live.

P.S. It can be VERY loud when the weather is nice.

It's all yuppies now, they are the only ones that can afford it. Everyone else has been pushed out further along the L.

Many of the long term residents (hispanics) are resentful and rightfully so.

In terms of safety, you are more likely to be robbed and assaulted for you possessions as opposed to being murdered without cause.

Actually that particular little pocket, the Southside east of the BQE, is the one part of Williamsburg that is mostly ungentrified and still Latino by a large margin. All the apartment buildings are large and old and therefore rent stabilized, which I'm sure is part of the reason.

It's not unsafe, but it gets LOUD in the summer.

Ehh I guess if you want to be close to the billyburg/brooklyn scene bad enough it's worth it. Like other people pointed out it's kinda the one last remaining part of billyburg resisting gentrification. It is what it is though. It's polluted, ugly, and dense, and yes loud in the summer. You could do better for the same rent you would pay there...
