Going to check out Astoria in detail this weekend, only been out there a handful of times and were pretty sure it will be our next neighborhood so we want to get a closer look.
We were thinking take the N to 30th then walk from Steinway st/30th ave area to Roosevelt isl via Hells Gate then walk down Roosevelt isl to catch the tram into Manhattan.
i know its a bit of a trek but my girl has never been to Roosevelt isl so kill two birds kind of thing.
So what walking routes would you recommend, straight down Broadway or 36th to the bridge? and what things along that way would you guys recommend we check out.

thanks in advance

I don't recommend the walk, it's very long and you'll walk through some projects and desolate areas. If you really want to walk and feel that you'll be comfortable walking through projects and isolated areas, get off at the 36th ave stop on the N/Q and walk west all the way across to the Roosevelt Island bridge. Walk across, make left on island, head to the south tip for the tram. Also,
the N/Q is on 31st st so Steinway is east of the train, Roosevelt Island is to the west.

From the N/Q stop on 36th to Roosevelt Island, maybe about 40 mins. From Steinway and Broadway, definitely over 1 hr, 15 mins to walk. If you walk from Steinway, there are tons of places and good restaurants. If you really, really want to do the walk/tour, I would recommend you walk from Steinway and 30th, south on Steinway, make right on Broadway, make left on Crescent, right on 36th to Roosevelt Island for a full tour.

Good luck

What you're planing to do is a lot of walking. It's definitely doable but it's gonna take some time and comfortable shoes.
If you have a pair of bicycles, I would recommend doing it that way instead.
It's gonna be more enjoyable, less tiring and you'll able to see much more in a shorter time.

cool, thanks for the suggestions guys.
as for the distance, we dont mind at all. we try to walk at least a mile everyday, sometimes 3 or 4.
as for the PJ's, not terribly worried (lived in bed-stuy in the early 90's)
and yes Latikeriii, we were thinking walk over to steinway first, then down and back westward towards the isl.

Too much walking:

Just take the N train to 59th and Lex and walk a block East to the tram and go "backwards" to Roosevelt Island.

Reverse the trip to go home. (tram to subway and vice versa is a free transfer if done in 2 hrs (+16 to 18 minutes GRACE) with a Metrocard.

(Take the bus to loop the Island...$.25 for adults, a DIME for senior. You see the whole island without collapsing at the end.)
