How long are you going to be there? I've mentioned this a few times. But you're able to rent bikes in Manhattan at several locations. If you're going to be there for a couple days I would recommend renting a bike. I think it will run you close to 50 dollars for a day. But being by yourself it would be a great way to explore the city quicker. The west side bike bath is really beautiful and you could even ride over the Brooklyn Bridge. If you are interested in a few things I'm sure you'll get a lot of feedback.
I wouldn't recommend biking around the city, especially over bridges, etc to tourists.Biking in NYC is pretty dangerous, especially for out of towners not familiar with the city, the traffic, etc. It's too easy to get squished by a bus,a taxi cab or a dump truck, all of which happens fairly regularly, even to seasoned city cyclists.

If you're on regular streets I agree. But the west side bike path is ONLY for bikers. You also can make your way to Central Park where they do not allow cars either.
I'll be there for 7 days. I don't want to think about how long it's been since I've rode a bike. I think I'm gonna leave the biking to the folks who know what they're doing...I can only imagine trying to watch the traffic, pedestrians and getting from A to B all without killing myself or some innocent bystander while trying to navigate the city. Do not underestimate my ability to get lost...I have turned it into an art.

Wow, 7 days is a good amount of time. I'll just list some things I've done or hope to do in my next couple trips.
Times Square
Ground Zero
Wall St
Walk Brooklyn Bridge
Walk around downtown Brooklyn
Central Park Zoo
Bronx Zoo
Brooklyn Aquarium (Coney Island)
Staten Island Ferry (might as well since you'll be there 7 days)
China Town/Little Italy
Central Park
Top of The Rock/Empire State Building
Citi Field/Yankee Stadium
Grand Central Station
NYC Public Library
That's all I can think of off the top of my head. But 7 days is a good amount of time so that you don't have to rush through anything. I would try and find a reason to visit each borough. Get a 7 day metro pass with unlimited rides.
I've been twice before so many of those I've done...and I must admit, plan to do again. LOL This will actually be the first time I've been there by myself. Since I plan to move there in a couple of years, I'm hoping to get a feel of what it will be like being in such a large city by myself. I was considering trying to get a temp job for the week but the idea of fighting with taxes in two states has changed my mind. I will be getting the unlimited pass so I won't have to worry about transportation.
