I've been scoping out Riverdale with the google streetview. Nice looking area. In particular the area around W. 235th and Johnson Ave. looks interesting with lots of stores, restaurants, delis, etc., and I assume maybe a few good watering holes. Looks like a trek to the subway though. From the map the best looking route looks like it would be to take W. 235th st. to Riverdale Ave. then down to W. 231st then over to the subway at W. 231st and Broadway. Is there a better route that's not evident from the map? And how is the neighborhood along W. 231st? I think that neighborhood is called Kingsbridge.

you could take the W 238th street step street to the 238th street station but that step street can be sketchy, esp at night

W 231 street is pleasant for the most part. you'll see some new condo projects(my doctor moved down the block into the Sycamore condo). I consider W 231 street to be bland but a cool shopping area

I figured there's some kind of pedestrian path through there but it doesn't show up on the streetview.

Yeah, I can see a bit of the step street with the streetview. Does look a little dicey. Not to mention negotiating the steps after a couple of pints.

it's like paying a toll; you either "step down" into Kingsbridge from Riverdale and get mugged or you get mugged before you "step up" to Riverdale

area is still stable but avoid that step street; i fact all step streets in the area. i don't care for them at all

The most direct pedestrian route goes through Ewen Park, which is fine by day, though a lot of steps. At night, I would stay away from the park, especially getting off the subway, as there was a recent crime of opportunity, very rare for the area, but troubling where a chef was murdered for his iPhone. You could always take the Bx7 to/from W236th & Riverdale, saving the walk up the hill. The Bx7 stops about 1/2 block from the subway at Broadway on W231st, so it would be a convenient transfer.

If walking at night, I would stick with Riverdale all the way up the hill, turning off at 235th because 232nd is a bit desolate as it borders the park, and is the area where the iPhone murder occurred. Once up to the shopping area on Riverdale, there are many more apartments and people around, even later at night, so it would be a safer walk than closer to the park. During the day, you could always walk along W231st to Ewen Park, especially if you need some extra stair climber time.

I agree that 231st has been decent, and has had some positive changes, what with the newer condominium buildings in Kingsbridge in the immediate vicinity. You would not have any problems walking in that area, though it can be quiet at night. I have seen car service vehicles that wait nearer W225th at the subway, so that would also be an option in rain, to get off at that station, and take a car service to Riverdale.

Thanks for the info. By the way, me getting mugged or worse for an iPhone ain't going to happen as I don't own one and barely know what it is. If you look up "old school" in the dictionary there's a picture of me.

Take the subway to 231st and catch the #7 bus up Riverdale to 235th. The bus is probably free to you. The walk is too far and it's very much of a hill for regular commuting when you just want to get home and fall into a cold beer.

I say this even KNOWING that the Riverdale bus service is NOT the best in the City but maybe I don't have a clear view because I've gone there only on weekends.
