Hi everyone,

After moving to NYC several years back, I was silly and allowed my NJ driver's license to expire (you know, subways). It's been over two years, so I am not eligible for any of the easy roads, but I was wondering if I'll have to start all over again with courses and a learner's permit or what to obtain my NYC license.

I figure I will have to take a test and I would definitely do some hours in a car with an instructor to get my skills back up to par, but does anyone else have experience getting a license in NYC after your previous one expired elsewhere? I'd love to hear what you learned about the process.

Thank you so much!

No you won't have to do the in car driving classes but you will have to pay for and take their mandatory 5 hour room instruction class. As long as you state you had a previous license in another state you won't be required to get an instructor.

Go to the site where they have a ridiculously almost carbon copy of the written test to practice for your temp.

If you feel a little out of practice about driving either get a hold of a friend's car or pay for a day or two at a driving school to become reaquainted.

Remember during the test not to rely on your rear view mirrors to change lanes or to move into traffic since this would be an automatic fail, you must turn your head to look first. NY focuses on parallel parking, left turn onto streets, and making a u-turn.
