4 friends and I want to live in NYC (Manhattan) for the summer. Not this summer exactly, but maybe next year. We're all 17-18 years old and we really just want to go to the city for the experience. The reason for us planning now is so we can start saving and getting ready earlier on instead of scrambling a few weeks before the big move. How much would you say it would cost to get at least a two bedroom studio apartment and have fun. (go to concerts, cafes, restaurants ect.) Also, we're all from LI.

Edit: Yeah I meant a two bedroom apartment. Sorry about that.

A two bedroom or a studio? I'm assuming you meant a two bedroom. A studio apartment is an apartment that is just a large open space. In terms of price, if you want to go for the experience and want to be in Manhattan I would figure somewhere in the $3,000-$4,000/month range (probably closer to the $4,000). That would get you into a trendy fun neighborhood which would make going for the experience worth it. So in order to go June-August (3 month sublet), plus go out a lot and have fun I would say you're looking at somewhere around $7,000 each. That would pay your rent and give you around $300/week spending money. Might need more.

Sounds good, we were planning to get at least $5,000 each for rent alone that way we could get a decent apartment. For five people that would be $25,000 total for three months. Also, for utilities we wanted $1,000 each totaling to $5000. We sell jewelry which gives us around $500 a month for everybody so in 12 months that would be $6000 for all of us. Add all of that together and we have a total of $36,000 minimum.

You can get a short term vacation apartment that will run you anywhere from $50-200 a night. So if you calculate that, it will be between $1500-$6000 a month. A friend of mine rented an apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn for $58 a night. It was her and 5 other girls in a 2 bedroom apartment. It was just a subway ride to Manhattan, which ended up leaving her a lot of spending money. She also got to explore the other 4 boroughs. NYC is more than Manhattan, you should definitely explore Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. There is so much to do and so much to see.

Going out (especially in Manhattan) is very expensive. A meal at a decent restaurant will cost you up to $18 per person. One slice of pizza and a can of coke will cost you $3-$4, but you can't live on eating pizza and hot dogs for 2 months . So, each girls needs to have at least $300 a week just for food and coffee. If you're planning on going to nightclubs, that's going to be extra money. A lot of places charge anywhere from $20-$80 just to walk into the nightclub, and charge $5-8 for a non-alcoholic beverage (maybe even more, depending on the place.) Concerts are also pretty expensive, but you can attend the free concerts at the Great Lawn whenever they have free events. Add in metro-card fares, cab-fares, shopping, etc. etc .and it all adds up. I think that you girls should be have a minimum of $400 per week to spend. That cost would go down if you all decide to not eat out a lot and cook mostly at the apartment.

I agree. The summers are very hot and humid in NYC, so be prepared.

Sorry but this sounds like a waste of money to me. You want to save up money to live in NYC for 3 months. What about college, what are you going to do for money during that time, etc? You're 17-18: lots of the clubs, bars and nightlife activities are 21+ and up.

If your parents are loaded then go for it. You live in Long Island which is pretty close to NYC.
