I've noticed since moving and working in NYC that people tend to work different hours here than any other place in the country. Of course people in finance are up and at it early I"m sure, but in my industry (IT), people seem to come in around 10AM. I have friend who I've spoken with and they are on the same schedule and say their place of work is likewise slanted toward the late morning for arrival.

For those of you who do not do shift work (i.e., retail, manufacturing, etc.), what hours do you work? Is 10-6 or 6:30 the normal? Some days I come in early, some days not... just wondering how everyone else has their work schedule setup.

Actually, it depends on the kind of finance. Investment bankers (not traders) come in late and stay late. Lawyers too - a lawyer's working day in New York, at least at a big firm or a firm like a big firm in culture, begins at around 10 am and stretches later into the day or evening.

Everyday is different for me. Some early mornings, some late nights. And sometimes I work 20 days straight and sometimes I have 20 days in a row off. Although I do prefer 20 days of work over 20 days off anytime, hands down. Oh the joy of being an artist...

I work for a large financial firm in IT (engineering role, not ops or anything). I tend to get in around 9 and leave around 7 or so, could be later. The bane of my existence is 8AM meetings (happens once or twice a week), when I'm frequently in the office from 8AM-7PM. I tend to prefer late nights over early mornings, so if I have any influence over meeting schedules, I tend to do it in the evening.

That being said, I work on a very global team, so that's part of the strange hours.

I work at a bank. Supposed to be 8-5 or 9:30 to 6:30 but given the lack of staff here, I have 2-3 days a week from 8-6:30. Thursday's always suck because it's 7:30am to do ATM's. Have to do 2 saturdays a month 9:30-3:30. I wish banks went back to 9-3:30
