While I know everyone has a list of places they must see, especially when people visit from out of town, I'm wondering about the other places. The ones you discovered while getting lost, or came across on a fluke.
I've been to enough tourist places in my time, but there's something to be said for dragging a friend who may have even lived here their whole lives to a place only you know about and they never discovered.
What would be your favorite hidden spots for this?
Mine for instance....this really old pier that is hidden near the Belt Parkway by my old neighborhood. We used to have to walk along a very long path with neck high weeds to get there, but once there, you could go fishing or just relax. It's one of those places you feel like you're the only one on earth for miles.
There's a park in Staten island in the coastguard campus on the north shore that has a section right under the Verrazano bridge. The bridge looks amazing from sea level, as do the towering merchant ships going in and out the harbor. Usually the only people there are the occasional anglers.
-The nature trails in Van Cortlandt Park, and the old Van Cortlandt house (which is now a museum)
-Fort Tryon and Inwood Hill Park, when you get off the main paths, both have all kinds of hidden places
-The Hispanic Society of America's museum
-Not exactly off the beaten path, since it's always full of people, but definitely off the tourist agenda...Sunset Park
I love the forest in the NY Botanical Garden. It's a remnant of the original forest that once covered most of NYC and includes waterfalls on The Bronx River.Everyone goes to The Botanical Garden but most people don't even know the forest exists.
I still can't get over the fact(and neither can people I bring there) that there is a beautiful forest with a river with a real waterfall less than 5 blocks from my apartment !
This is probably at the other end of the spectrum from "touristy" things to do in New York, but I like wandering around in industrial districts--especially on a weekend, when most of the businesses are closed. You can pretend you're the last person on Earth!
