I want to get the views (positive or negative) of residents of the area(s) of this issue. I do want to know how the foreclosure situation is, and its impact on the two neighborhoods. I've only read stories and data on the foreclosure problem in SE Queens, and would love to get the viewpoint of people who see the issue with their own eyes everyday!

Similarly, most of the crime in Jamaica generally occurs within a small area and it can be argued that those small sections are worse than South Jamaica, similar situation goes for East NY and Brownsville...

If we're talking about per capita rates i'd say no question South Jamaica... But if we're talking about worse sections of both neighborhoods, i'd say Jamaica is on par if not worse than South Jamaica in certain parts...
South Jamaica since when does South Jamaica have it's own neighborhoodsand Jamaica's neighborhoods our not worse then South Jamaica.

He's talking about specific subsections within those 2 neighborhoods. South Jamaica down by Foch Blvd is different from the area by Lakewood Avenue.

What about Hollis too? East Elmhurst used to be mostly Black, but isn't as Black as it used to be. Here's an interesting article about east Elmhurst from some years back: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/28/ny...n=&oref=slogin

Jamaica proper = I would say 89th Avenue from 150th Street to Merrick. Those side blocks north of Jamaica Avenue are not safe.

South Jamaica = besides the 2 projects (South Jamaica and Baisley), Guy R Brewer from Linden Blvd to South Road, Sutphin Blvd from Linden Blvd to Liberty Avenue, and the small area thats called Bricktown (near Liberty Avenue and 177th Street) are the worst that I know of.

I know somebody who lives close to the Lakewood Ave area who considers themselves to be South Jamaica but i've always known that area as just Jamaica. For the record, when I was over there it didn't seem that bad at all but we are usually there before the sun goes down so maybe it changes then?

Is there like an official/unofficial boundary to the area?
North:Liberty Ave

West: Van Wyck Expressway

East:Merrick Blvd

South:Foch Blvd.

This is for Southside
