I've been to New York City several times, but this August will mark the first occasion I'll not be staying or parking in Manhattan. Rather, I'll be lodging in Greenpoint, and am trying to find a decent location to leave my car for several days. I don't know whether or not there's any free street parking nearby, although I have searched parking garages using Google. Everywhere is still fairly expensive, and I've only come across a handful of places in either Brooklyn or Manhattan that charge less than $30 a day. Last time I was around, I had to pay almost $100 for using one of the cheaper Icon facilities in the Upper West Side.
From what I can gather, the most affordable 24/7 parking facilities seem to be in Queens, specifically Long Island City. I've seen several places on PrimoSpot that show daily rates of between $7 to $14 a day - low enough that I'm somewhat skeptical of them still being up-to-date.
That aside, LIC is a bit out of the way (I'd rather not have to pay for the privilege of using the Queens-Midtown Tunnel), and I'm wondering if there's anywhere closer in Brooklyn or Manhattan that I don't know about. I had a friend tell me you can park for free in some residential neighborhoods like Bay Ridge, but he didn't mention how crowded parking is or if it's available only to residents. I'd honestly be fine taking the train up from Brighton Beach or Bensonhurst, as I know people down that way who could check in on my car once or twice a day.
Thanks. Sorry about the long post, and for having asked what I'm sure is a fairly common question.
There's free parking under the BQE and it's usually not hard to get a spot. You just have to make sure to move your car for street cleaning, read the signs.
