I'm from southern Oregon and I have mixed reviews and ideas of what New York is like. I've seen so many movies that were filmed there, and so many live events that were held in New York City. I've talked to so many people that absolutely love New York and its like a dreamland to them. I've read many books where the person would never ever live anywhere else but New York City because its the most beautiful city ever. Etc.etc.etc
But on the other hand, I hear of how absolutely hellish NYC is. I hear of all the horrible gangs and blood and knifes and murders and how if you even brush someone's shoulder or look at someone the wrong way...bad stuff happens. And how its just dirty, ghetto, filthy and grey everywhere
Like its just weird to me how one city can be described completely black and white. Almost as if two different places are being described. Like I don't understand how like rich, successful business men and women are like safe on the streets walking to work if there are just frightening gangs on the street there.
Obviously I've never been to New York so if someone who lives there can help clear this up for me, I would really appriciate it!
Depends on where you live. There are litterally two New Yorks. One for the wealthy, another for the struggling. It's great to live in NYC if you are wealthy. It's horrible to live in NYC if you are struggling. Economic disparities are huge here.

its all perspective somebody to nyc for a weekend has dinner a show gets back on the plane. talks and talks bout nyc what a great place.
other couple get on the plane get to hotel walk 2 blks to theatre dragged in an alley gang rape robbery and beating. they come home with a different story bout nyc. same town same weekend package.

It can happen but it's a very rare occurance. Of course your chances are higher in lower income sections of the city where most crimes occure. NYC shares problems all big cities face. Including violent crime.

New York City is a very dangerous city, infact the most dangerous city in the world. I don't recommend visiting ever. Something bad can hapened to you anytime. Infact I feel like a gang is approcahing me right now!

Not all of NYC is a ghetto (in most parts of the city people feel relatively safe). Rich business men and women feel safe in NYC because they typically don't frequent the ghettos. I think you've watched too many movies from the 80's showing the subways filled with graffiti.
Per City-data.com there are 325 crimes per every 100,000 people nationwide. In NYC there are only 285 crimes per every 100,000 people. Basically that means you are safer in NYC then you are in the majority of America. Medford, OR has 418 crimes per 100,000 people. Which means you are 50% more likely to be a victim of crime in Medford then NYC.
If you were to go to NYC and see for yourself what it's really all about you too would love it.

The numbers are pretty useless, I mean, you are about as likely to get robbed or assualted in NYC as Gary IN (murder cap couple years ago) according to the numbers. Go figure.
NYC has more "safe" areas then the average city. The chance of you getting mugged in most neighborhoods of this city is low. However, there are areas in this city where the chances of you becoming a victim of a crime are very real. You can decrease those odds using common sense. Like staying away from those areas.

New York is a LOT safer now than it was 15 years ago. It's one of the safest big cities now, I believe. In 1990 there were over 2,000 murders in the city. But for the past several years (since Rudy Giuliani became mayor), murders have dropped to about 600 a year - which sounds like a lot, but per capita it's pretty small, because there are 8 million people in New York. The murder rate is now what it was in the 1960s.
Also, the tourist areas have been cleaned up a LOT. In the '80s and early '90s, Times Square was full of porn theaters, prostitutes etc. Now they're gone and it's clean and I've taken my kids to see Disney shows on Broadway with no concern whatsoever.
You do have to watch out and be aware in case of pickpockets, etc. But with all the lights and crowds, it's highly unlikely that you'd get mugged in the theater district or Times Square, IMO.
You'll also hear people on these boards bemoaning all the changes and missing the "edgy" New York of years past. Personally, I'm glad that the city is so much safer and cleaner than it used to be. But that's just me.
