Im in the process of getting my security license in New York City. Tomorrow I will get my 8 hour certificate and then, I will get my fingerprints.
The head guy in charge of the security school said that I should get my fire guard certificate, but I said i feel like it isn't necessary. Does anyone know if the fire guard certificate is really essential?
And are security companies flexible with work hours? The reason im asking is because i'm in school.

Hey Jonathan... Please read carefully...
DO NOT pay them any extra $$ for a "fire guard certificate" You will be out of $$.. If you want to pay for the fireguard PREPARATION that's something different BUT the reason being is that the ONLY and i repeat the ONLY place you can take the certificate of fitness exam (fire guard) is with the FDNY in their Metrotech building in Brooklyn AND you cannot just "walk-in" you have to be referred by your employer with a letter from them stating that you are of good character and in most cases a check from your employer to take with you on the day of your exam. I also think the FDNY has the study manuals online for free along with the test fee which i think is $25 or something like that.
I always laugh when I see these companies trying to scam people. My husband has been in the security industry (and has worked in all aspects of it) for over 15 yrs and I've learned a lot about this industry.
Just get your 8 & 16 hr certificates and apply for your license and start from there. Also, Look for jobs outside of regular security companies like a store or a non profit and get your hands on any experience you can get.
Hope this helps :-)
