(I have walked thorough the Washington Houses, the De Witt Clinton Houses, the Jefferson Houses, the Baruch Houses, the Holmes and Isaac towers, walked MILES in East Harlem (and I am lily white,) up and down the streets of the LOWER East Side 2 and 3 deecades ago and through dozens more projects without a second thought but going often to the Hudson Guild Theater on 25th was always worrisome. I don't feel threatened often but I felt it then. There's a special demographic of shiftless older teens and 20's men that give it that certain ominous feel.)

But hey, it's a free country: those who want to live on the street are certainly free to do so.
It is the projects after all. I've never walked around that area at night time.

And you're seriously saying Chealsea projects are that bad... I'd heard from some friends of mine that moved to Clinton that preach near that area that Chelsea is worse than it looks, but I never assumed it really was all that bad considering what's around it.

It's just a couple blocks that are awful. Most of Chelsea is just fine.

I'm soorry guys, I misspoke just a bit.
I revisited the area yesterday doing several art galleries in the area and took a look at the Elliot-Chelsea Houses

I was off by one block. THe HORRIFIC block from my past memory is West 26th between Ninth and Tenth not West 25th as I had repeatedly posted.

Seriously. I live in 241st Wakefield and I would switch ANYDAY to live in or around that area. Hell, give me the Chelsea Projects compared to this ghetto trash war zone. I can't tell you how much I hate this area.

The projects aren't the best, sure but its not like you're living in them and on top of that, your much closer to everything that everyone wants to go to anyway. You should be totally okay.

I workout at the Chelsea projects from time-to-time at night and I've never been in any situation. I also see plenty of White folks, gay or straight, couples or night walk through the area and not get into a single ounce of trouble. You'll be A-OKAY.

Well you're walking right through the middle...projects on both sides....I can see how that could look worse. With that being said I'm try to get out there be4 the summer is over on a Saturday night and assess.

It's fine... there are some characters but nobody bothers you. The smell, on the other hand...

I'll be worried to walk around there too. Yesterday I turned on the news and why was Chelsea mentioned twice. A man was stabbed coming out of the Levis store and the another man was stabbed in the train station. After reading all these posts too. It makes you think so be careful.

While we're on the topic of bad lower Manhattan projects, a special shout out goes to Campos. I have heard horrible things about those buildings. I think it's Alphabet City.
