For a single person like me with a very modest/low-maintenance lifestyle and no kids, I would say i'd be comfortable with $50k (before taxes) a year.

All I need is a basic 1 bedroom apartment in a half-decent area with good subway connection then i'm straight!

$1,300mo apartment
$80mo for cable
$80mo for food
$140mo for transportation
$60mo for cell-phone
$200mo for other misc. stuff like shopping or whatever..

The rest for savings!

It's NY, there almost is no comfort level, because you can always find a lifestyle which exceeds your income, until you get to the hyper-rich level like Bill Gates or something.

Yes, it's doable.

Take a trip out to BJ's or Costco's in the suburbs and buy stuff in bulk for very cheap prices. Coupons help tremendously too. You'd be surprised..

Nope,

$80 per month is completely undoable in the New York, Costco's or not.
There is nothing you can buy that will give you 1500-2000 calories per day and an adequate supply of protein for that amount of money.
McDonald's has a BIG come-on sale on triple cheeseburgers this month for $2...530 calories. You cannnot make a big burger much cheaper than that at home.
One of those a day will already set you back set you back $65.61 including tax and you will quickly starve to death on 530 calories/day.

Bags of rice & beans? Peanut butter & jelly sandwiches?

I'd budget $450 / month for food since I like to eat out ocassionally.
