The fastest "normal" weekday commute from Woodlawn is to take metro north from the Woodlawn stop to Grand Central. It only takes about 20 minutes but costs 3 times as much as the subway. Also,it really only makes sense if you work within walking distance of Grand Central.Otherwise you have to get on the subway(and pay again) once you get to Grand Central to finish your trip.

The next fastest commute and probably the best all around option for convenience, connections and expense would be to take the 5 express train from White Plains Road and either Nereid Ave or White Plains Road and 233rd st. Either stop is a relatively short walk(about 5 blocks) from most of Woodlawn, much closer than the "Woodlawn " stop on the 4 and the 5 express trains will be a faster ride to midtown too. If your ultimate destination is on the West Side you can also take the 2 train from the same stops. There is also a 5 express train that runs back to The Bronx during the late afternoon and evening rush.

I took the Metro-North to 125th and then took the 6 so that's also do-able. The trip was actually quicker to my job in Manhattan than relying on the BX 34 and then the 4 train. It's worth the extra cash to get a monthly metro-card and a monthly Metro-North to Grand Central pass.

Glad to see more Irish moving to Woodlawn! Great area.

I think your commute will be about an hour. Bus out of woodlawn, pick up the D train in Norwood. Reverse going home.

Good luck and welcome to the Bronx!
