Do the nypd supervisors/detectives make better money than the patrol to the extent that they can actually afford the cost of living? I am curious because every blog on nypd salaries only seems to be about the patrol and not the supervisors/detectives.

Careful !!! That's a pandoras box that your about to open!!!!
At top pay, "patrol" - aka, the rank of police officer - does ok for NYC. You won't be living in the best of the best neighborhoods, but there's plenty of very good, blue collar, safe corners of this city where a police officer could purchase a home. Obviously supervisors do even better the higher one goes.

They make good money from what I can tell, and detectives definitely bank...somewhere around 100k+ with OT which they get plenty of.
Officers make a good salary as well, especially after 5 years not including OT.
Overall, the PD is a good gig money wise.
Yeah I can believe that when you get to hire positions. I don't really know anyone in New York City and so if I was to ever end up there, I would rather consider it if I can qualified for something like that with a good pay.

Using the sliding chart, you can see that after 6 years, NYPD officers should be making $77K base pay, $91K total compensation before overtime, $100K with a little OT. There are 22,000 officers.
5,000 detectives make $87K base, $97K total compensation, plus good OT.
4,500 sergeants make $99K base, total comp $110K, plus some OT.
NYC's budget notes that NYPD overtime exceeds 10% of salary. http://www.council.nyc.gov/html/budg...Department.pdf
