Lena Cohen of the nonprofit group United Neighborhood Houses is training community center workers about the U.S. Census.

After the last census in 2010, New York State lost two seats in Congress, reducing its delegation in the House to 27 members.

“There’s a fear that we could lose additional representation in Washington at this time,” said Susan Stamler, the executive director of United Neighborhood Houses.

United Neighborhood Houses is part of a massive effort in the city to make sure every New Yorker is counted. The census determines not just congressional representation, but also federal funding.

“Things like housing, highways, transportation, food stamps, education. Essentially, everything that New Yorkers and people in Brooklyn need every day,” said Stamler.

Based on the 2010 census, New York receives about $73 billion a year.

“So fewer headcounts mean fewer dollars for New York state,” Stamler added.

Its their livelihood, "ends meat". If their funding is cut off, then so are their jobs. That is what is worrying them. The unprecedented challenge is the possibility of finding another source of income.

I believe the state is projected to lose at least another seat.
Fixing the tax situation in Albany will go a long way if the state wants to stop hemorrhaging people.

Well, I do admit that knowing how many people are located where is very important. But perhaps it should just be an already established govt agency that does the findings. The findings are meant for the govt own use afterall.

Opinion:
Crazy as it sounds they are handing out Licenses to undocumented immigrants.
If things get so bad that the jobs are lost and handouts stop it makes it that
much easier to leave the state in search of employment and subsidy
elsewhere.

Just what do think Census Department does in off years where there isn't an official count being conducted?
