As someone from Philly...my advice would be to park in Staten Island, near the ferry. There's residential parking there. There is no alternate side parking. You can take the ferry over to the city without having to worry about a thing and come back the same way.
If you get the advance purchase (at least 3 days purchase before your trip) ticket from Greyhound it'll cost Round Trip . . .. . $16.99.
It's really a no brainer just leave your car at home.

I live in Philly and I'd like to take a trip up to NYC for a day. I don't want to bring my car into Manhattan. Are there any places in New Jersey where I could park my car for the day and then take a bus or train into Manhattan ? Where would you recommend ? Thanks in advance.
Harrison, NJ, near the PATH station. Then take PATH into the city. That's if you're going on a weekday. If you're going on a weekend, you might as well drive into Manhattan; just search the Internet for parking deals/coupons beforehand, I've had luck in lots near the Holland Tunnel. Street parking is a possibility (especially on Sunday) but kind of tough if you don't know the area.
Another good option is SEPTA to Trenton followed by NJ Transit to the city.
