I had a similar situation to the original poster once. I'm from Florida but visit NYC area frequently. I had business in both Manhattan and the Levittown/Hicksville area. I found the LIRR to be very convenient getting back and forth between Manhattan and Levittown/Hicksville. I have also rented a car on a separate occasion to do the same commute. The traffic there on the Long Island Expressway is hell. There is no reason for the original poster to rent a car. Not to mention they would need to pay an arm and a leg to park the rental car at their hotel.
