I moved here and I need to do/am concerned with a few things:

1. I need to change my driver's license from Michigan to NY.
2. My car is in Michigan with my parents as I'm not driving it here. I'm not going to be using my car here so what should I do as far as my driver's license? I don't want to pay insurance on a car I'm not going to drive.
2. I'm staying with a roommate and all the bills are going on her name, there is no way for me to prove I live where I live.
3. What can I use to prove my residency? I have a photo ID of my job as well as my insurance card here. My credit card and debit card are pointing to Michigan as well.

Where should I go and what should I take with me?!

Why do you need to prove residency? If you are a student you do not have to change anything.

NYS DMV - Driver License, Learner Permit and Non-Driver Photo ID Card

If you scroll down a bit it explains what to do if you are exchanging your Michigan license for a New York one.

If you are a student, you do not have to do this as you are not considered a resident.

See resident (definition)

See http://www.dmv.ny.gov/forms/id44.pdf (proofs of ID required to get NY Driver's license. If you surrender your Michigan license (must have your picture on it) you only need two "points" plus your social security card.)

Are you a student?

Why aren't you changing your address with your credit card or your bank?

If it's for CUNY, you have to follow specific rules and provide them with items like tax returns or leases. Just google CUNY residency requirements and you should have your pick of sites to click on with the regulations listed.

Is this what they're teaching you kids today about how to use the Information Superhighway? Go to a forum and ask others to do your homework for you?

You can leave your car in Michigan, it's only a problem if you bring the car to NYS permanently and do not register the vehicle in NYS. If the car is not to be driven, check MI's insurance requirements, as to whether or not the vehicle is validly registered without insurance. You will likely have to keep minimum coverages on the car to keep registration current, unless the vehicle is in storage, in which case you would not need to have it registered.
