I've had nothing but bad experiences with $.99 slices. $2-$2.50 seems to be the going rate for a decent slice. I'm sure there are good $.99 slices out there but I just don't like to risk it.

Rocky's on 14th between 8th and 9th is a good slice, but they charge a bundle ($3+ for a slice). The best I've found near my office, anyway.

How much of a risk is a dollar?

$3 plus for a reg slice?! Mamma mia!! It better be good.
BTW, I wouldn't compare Chicago style/deep dish to true NYC style pizza. Chicago style is its own thing. Two different food experiences. I like Chicago style every once in a blue...

Fair point, but for me the risk lies in the crushing disappointment of biting into a slice, filled with anticipation, and finding out that it's bad. Then having to eat it anyway, since one has to eat.
Any good dollar/slice places you recommend?

What I like about the $.99 shops is that each slice goes from an oven to person's mouth in SECONDS.
FRESH is a big plus.

Yes, that really is crap.
There's a place in Marble Hill, right beneath the 225th St station on the west side of b'way, that puts extra cheese on top of the pepperoni before reheating it. Very yummy, though a little heavy for a quick lunch.
They make a great veal parm hero, too.

I have never been disappointed with Cafe Arome ($.99 = $.01 tax.) It's mid block on 32nd between Sixth and Seventh Aves. Orrder downstairs, toss a buck (or three) at the clerk and sit at tables upstairs. I eat there every time I shop Jack's and Penney's. (Plus you can grab an ice cold 24 ounce can of beer in the back for $2.50.)
In the Village it's the East side of Sixth Ave. midway between Eigth St and Waverly Pl next to the BAC ATM and the subway entrance. Alas, no place to sit. Convenient to grab a couple slices and jump on the train at W4th.
In Times Square I like 41st and Ninth Ave when I am going to "Theater Row" on 42nd St....but again you have to stand to eat.
My neighborhood: 86th just 2 door West of First Ave...5 seats and I usually get lucky.
Grabbed a couple sliced today after the Conservatory Garden and checking out LaCelia Co-ops.
I have a list all over town.
Only chokingly bad, cold, old, inedible slice I ever got was at 36th and Ninth I believe...give or take a block. A big open air corner which had pizza that tasted like the Koch Admiinistration.
Needless to say, I LOVE pizza and have made it several times myself from scratch (make dough, knead dough, rise dough, rollout etc.)...delicious but slave labor.

Here's a good one: Rocky I Wood Fired Pizza (or something like that) at 8th and 14th Street. A little pricey (12 oz can of soda is $1.50) but the slice is excellent.

I am italian living in Switzerland. I spent one year in Washington DC and a lot of years travelling in Europe. I had some pizzas in US and there were not bad. I have never tried pizza in Brasil but please don't even trying to say that your pizza makes italian pizza looks like crap. you have not idea of what your are talking about. I like brazilian food but it is not famous for pizza
