Pataki called it The Freedom Tower. Sounded good to a lot of people at that moment, but fast forward a few years, Pataki's out and One World Trade Center needs to be internationally marketed. The name just wasn't going to work commercially.
For the same reasons that we kept calling the World Trade Center Towers, the North and South Tower, The Twins, or the Trade Center Towers when there names were:

One World Trade Center
Two World Trade Center

Technically, those first two names were Landmark and geographically correct. North and South towers were necessary since even with the antenna on WTC1, people still got confused.

I always thought they should build a life-size replica of the twin towers made of bronze as a memorial.

But no one working there ever called it the "North Tower" or the "South Tower" until after September 11. I never worked in "the north tower". I worked in "One" for 19 years.

I do remember seeing old drawings that were marked "Tower A" and "Tower B", but I guess that never caught on at all, lol.

The old towers were extremely ugly. No one had a single positive word to say about them until they were destroyed, and in fact they were a constant source of griping among locals. It's always amusing to me when people who I KNOW for a fact complained about them on a regular basis in August 2001 now wax poetic about how beautiful they were. The new building, while nothing particularly special, is far more attractive. The new Two World Trade Center, if it ever gets fully built, will be quite stunning.

The new towers are more architecturally interesting, but they lack the presence and character of the former twins. There was something iconic and poetic about the looming presence of the twin towers over the Lower Manhattan skyline, even if they were simple boxes. It was something from which one could derive metaphorical meaning or musing.

I'm also unimpressed by the design of the new WTC3. In the renderings, it somehow detracts from the presence of the other two.

The new WTC is much more aesthetically pleasing but the old WTC should still be up. It's still mind boggling...

I liked the Twins, not because they were particularly attractive, but because there were 2 of them. At the time, they were the only twin supertalls in the world (now there are others, i.e. Petronas Towers). You could see them from all over the city. I still remember my first visit to them, 12/31/74. I think when I first laid eyes on them, I must have stared, mouth agape, kinda like Eddie Murphy in Trading Places I went up to the observation deck three times, all in 1976. The last time (8/1/76), it was an unusally clear day for the summertime (not as clear and crisp as 9/11/01, but still pretty good). Got some great pics from the deck I moved from NYC later that month, but still tried to see the WTC, or at least get pics every time I visited. 9/11/01 was a horrible day for me, but I'm beginning to appreciate the new 1 WTC, and will probably go to see it once it is completed.

I never thought the twins were ugly but I did find them very drab looking and Found them to be enormous and lack character. They look like boxes.

Here's the construction of Towers 1 and 4. Towers 2 is on hold and 3 is waiting for the signing for the potential tenant. GroupM is seeking to rent space in 3.

One World Trade Center

Here's 4 world trade center
