the Jerome Park area mentioned is more considered Kingsbridge Heights and is patrolled by the 50; east of Jerome(Morris, Creston, etc) is more like Fordham Bedford and is patrolled by the 52
Lol that's not the south Bronx, by any definition.
It's not that far from it either.
Stop trying to make the Bronx "happen". It won't.
"Some" parts are decent, but the majority of it, especially the neighborhoods that are close to Manhattan (South Bronx) will ALWAYS be home to undesirables.
It's a toss up between Marble Hill and Kingsbridge Heights with respect to the 50th and crime, since not all areas are like Kingsbridge and Riverdale in that precinct.
I do not think that it suffered from burn-outs and abandonment, but did have a large proportion of long-term rent controlled/stabilized tenants. Some blocks are better than others, but the natural contours of the area, combined with hotbeds of crime in adjacent areas can make this an attractive area for crime, property, robberies, etc.

yes, reason i asked is because i have a great aunt and uncle who have lived on W 197th street (around Webb/Claflin area) for decades. I am not close at all with these relatives but I am curious (and no I am not a prejudiced person so I am not insinuating anything here) as to how they manage in an area that has a high crime rate and also being in the minority (they are caucasian). when i met this aunt almost 20 years ago she was telling us how back in the 70's she had met up with a burglar in her living room. i also remember them saying how they wanted to move to Inwood but i don't think they ever did
i guess its better than living closer to Jerome and the Concourse for an elderly couple tho...
