Exchanges had names all over the country I think. I sort of miss them as they were descriptive, colorful and most importantly helpful in knowing where somebody lived or where a business was. When someone's number began with MU (Murray Hill) or PL (Plaza) you knew where thy were in a way you don't know now with just the numbers. I remember when I was a kid my exchange was AU for Audobon. I still have relatives uptown whose numbers I remember only with the Audobon prefix and instinctively say Audobon x-xxxx, instead of saying 28x-xxxx.

And of course the big 1940s Glen Miller hit ( and no, I wasn't around then) was named "Pennsylvania 6-5000," which I believe is still the number for the Hotel Pennsylvania across from Madison Square Garden. Now its 736-5000. Try writing lyrics to that!

I lived for a number of years in Baltimore as a little girl and I don't remember there being letters at the beginning of the tel. phone the way it was for my grandparents' tel. number in Queens.

Heres a good one.

Back in the day, when we had the basic TV channels 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13. (and yet, there was always something to watch).

But anyway, late night around 4am ish, when the last TV program would be over the TV screen turned to something looking like a dart board with a circle and colored circles with a black center and a sound like a steady whooooooooooooooooooooooooooo....It stayed like that till 5am when the next TV show would come on.

OK, kiddies, who else remembers that? 5 points

I remember it when the "art boar was ONLY black and white. Grew up with near NY and don't even remember ch. 5 or 13 -- maybe I never watched them. I do remember the tv went off after Million Dollar Movie ( music was the GWTW Tara Theme) -- used to watch those as I babysat!

Yes the sound was like the
emergency broadcast tone.

Any body remember Tokens

If you do how about the Y in the middle.

It is 10 o'clock do you know where your children are.

The blue cups coffee would be served in only in NY.

Hot dog vendors would roll their water dog charts thru the neighbor hoods.

Hook and ladder fire truck there was a driver in the back of the truck. The truck would swing as it turned corners.
