I go a bit cheaper and use a 20 inch breeze box all Winter that sits on the floor. I tape on a 20 x 20 filter from Home Depot (3 for about $7...rated FPR 4... MERV 8 which traps 85% of particles at 10 microns, 70% at 3 microns. (A grain of salt is 100 microns across.)
The filter lasts about 6 weeks running constantly, getting pretty black and cutting down on air flow, and then I tape in a new one.
And I know that all this crap hasn't settled on cabinets, desks, TV's, bureaus, etc...and LUNGS.
I really see a big difference.
If I leave my windows open on a Tuesday, I spend Wednesday morning weilding a dust rag...so no more fresh air for me. This is one dirty city.

I've known a couple people who lived on the top floor a Brooklyn row house without A/C.
And that gets all that godforsaken ROOF heat.
