to be on the 6th floor with an air conditioner in the window and one window open, what would the outside(or inside temp according to my AC remote) temp have to be be to sleep comfortably without needing the AC on? I am guessing that by mid October or so the AC would no longer be needed?

I'm not sure I understand the point of your question. Isn't that an individual preference? As a matter of fact, doesn't it also have to do with things like whether you wear pajamas? I already would have stopped using the air conditioning.

everyone has their idea of the perfect temperature.

To me, the perfect temperature is when you don' even notice if you are hot, or cold, or stuffy, or damp.

If you don't think about the temperature, meaning, you are not saying, "I am too hot', "I am too cold", "it is too wet".etc

than that is the perfect temperature.

I haven't used AC in a while now except for an occasional really humid day. Definitely an individual preference as well as what your exposure is (ie how much your apartment heats up during the day if sun facing).

If I had my druthers, I would ALWAYS be exactly at 73 degrees, Winter and Summer with windows epoxied shut to keep the filth out (and somebody cleaning them from the outside.)
It would be a central unit with a LOCKED thermostat and only one key: mine.
The air would constantly pass through fine filters to remove dust adding only enough filtered outside air with each pass to keep odors down.
One button for emergencies would provide temporary FAST VENTING in case of cooking smoke.

Of course this means a private home...and kind of leaves NYC out.

Ahhh, Nirvana.

(Living a block away from the Second Ave. Subway BIG DIG has convinced me that NYC does not have anything approaching what the world would call FRESH AIR.)

Thinking ahead, perhaps a SECOND button called BEDBUG DISPOSAL might be wise. Hit that button and the home goes to 120 degrees while I take a weekend vacation.

I keep a couple of air purifiers in my apartment and run them practically 24/7. I change the filters every three months. They'll be covered with dust and dirt so I figure that's some crud that I'm not breathing in. Also, the purifiers make a soft whirring sound like a fan. I find this restful and it drowns out the noises from outside my apartment. That's something you New Yorkers can appreciate.
