When Stella d'Oro was family-owned and they had the restaurant as well, it was quite a landmark in Kingsbridge, not to mention the aromas of the baking.
The new property on that site, Riverdale Crossing, despite not being in Riverdale, no wonder people are confused about neighborhoods, is supposed to be a mini-mall with the BJs. At one point, there was a rumor of a Trader Joe's, but I do not think that has materialized, or negotiations are still in the works. I think Petco is also confirmed for the site, and a bank. TJs would likely do well, though it could be a death knell for Garden Gourmet, especially since TJs has brand recognition.

yeah i love Garden Gourmet. I remember about 16 years ago I was in what is now Garden Gourmet and it was just an oversized superette with a salad bar. you know what i do miss is Amici's Salumeria deli(B'way corner 233rd) which is now i think an H&R Block or a law office. REAL Italian style deli which you don't see in Riverdale/K'bridge
remember the Donaghy steak house on B'way and 230th? long gone.
they fixed up the Foodtown really nice. I love to go in there
Marble Hill, Spuyten Duyvil, Kingsbridge, Riverdale, Fieldston. There seems to be some confusion as to the exact boundaries of all these areas. For instance, W. 242nd and Broadway that I mentioned. Would this location be considered Riverdale, Kingsbridge, or Fieldston?
242 street and Broadway is still Riverdale. Fieldston is probably between Manhattan College Pkwy not far west of B'way, and say about W 253rd street and H Hudson Pkwy. Kingsbridge is south of 240th street to 230th street between the Deegan(I 87) and Irwin Avenue ( the crest of the hill)
I do remember Donaghy, and in their heyday, there were two locations, on Broadway and the Carriage Inn in Larchmont. Today, however, I think Jake's makes for a better steakhouse experience on Broadway.
The Foodtown was significantly upgraded when it was remodeled a couple of years ago, such that it puts the Key/Dan's in Riverdale to shame in terms of decor. That Stop & Shop on Broadway is one that I try to avoid as I've never had a good shopping experience there. If I need Stop & Shop for a particular item when in Riverdale, I will drive the extra few minutes to Cross County for the newer store.
Garden Gourmet is a good place in the neighborhood, too, I agree. And, it diversifies the offerings in Riverdale-Kingsbridge.
That is true that many think once you're east of the Deegan, it's all Riverdale, not Kingsbridge, Marble Hill, or Van Cortlandt Village.
